International S13 Integrated Powertrain

On August 16th, 2022, International launched the new S13 Integrated Powertrain. Navistar has been very clear that they anticipate this will be the last combustion engine that they make from scratch. With the global collaboration with TRATON GROUP, the S13 Integrated Powertrain will provide excellent performance for serviceability to the commercial vehicle market. “The International S13 Integrated Powertrain sets an industry standard for efficiency, profitability, and sustainability,” said Mathias Carlbaum, Chief Executive Officer. This engine is one step closer to helping Navistar’s journey to zero-emissions transportation.

The S13 will gain up to 15% in fuel efficiency when compared to the A26 engine. This is the lightest powertrain in the market, with a weight reduction of 52lbs! Göran Nyberg, Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations says, “Our new optimized powertrain paired with a comprehensive ownership solution has a long-expected product life with excellent residual value, truly resetting the standard for the total operating economy in our industry.” This new engine is sustainably efficient and will allow fleets to concentrate on their core businesses.

The new S13 Integrated Powertrain has several features that will help customers maximize their uptime. The S13 Integrated Powertrain consists of three components: an engine, a transmission, and an aftertreatment system. Designed to guarantee maximized compatibility and integration between systems. Below are the 3 components broken down into the facts and features they provide:

ENGINE
  • 13-liter engine that accomplishes fuel efficiency and performance through combustion efficiency.
  • Runs on low revolutions and higher torque equating to less fuel consumption and fewer fuel injections.
  • Designed with selective catalytic reduction technology with no exhaust gas recirculation cooler.
  • Flows 100% of the exhaust to the turbocharger in normal engine operating conditions. This process will allow cleaner air to enter the combustion chamber on the intake cycle to lessen soot buildup.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump operates at a lower pressure of 1,800 bar.
  • For performance, the engine has seven engine rating options, maximum of 515 horsepower, and 1,850 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 revolutions per minute governing speed.
  • Additional features include a dual overhead cam design, cast aluminum cam cover, oil pan, and more.
TRANSMISSION FEATURES
  • First commercial transmission offered by International.
  • 14-speed fully automated manual transmission with an electronic clutch actuator delivering faster and smoother shifting.
  • Two crawler gears for improved heavy-load start ability and low-speed maneuvering.
  • Full torque at 900 RPM to support drivability.
  • Additional features include intelligent shifting capabilities, like skip shifting and turning radius offsets. As well as hill hold and initial vehicle movement modes.
AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEM
  • The Dual Stage Aftertreatment was built for easy access serviceability, improved emissions control, and fuel efficiency.
  • Includes a dual-stage SCR catalyst system in a one-box design to keep temperatures at an ideal range.
  • The cleaner combustion cycle allows for extended service intervals and eliminates the need for a regeneration cycle and the diesel oxidation catalyst.
  • The design eliminates the need for active diesel particulate filter regeneration saving fleets time and fuel.
The International S13 Integrated Powertrain includes several other benefits to the customer besides the product itself, including: built-in service products, repair maintenance contracts, dealer-integrated software, and so much more! Before the product goes into serial production it will have logged more than 4 million miles of field testing on North American roads including terrains from the deserts of Arizona to the frozen Tundra of Alaska.
